Start Right Chess Camp got my son Caleb started on his chess journey. Thanks to Coach Mac and Coach Majur’s warmth, enthusiasm, and personal connection — along with engaging lessons that were just right for his age and skill level — Caleb started a life-long love with a game that he continues to enjoy and benefit from three years later. — Parent, Elliot Z.
Our popular holiday camp returns! Taught by NM Coach Holly, each daily 2-hour session features a group lesson, competitive play, and a variety of fun activities such as Kahoot!, Roblox, and martial arts at the end of the day! Kids leave excited with the power of their own minds, improved self-confidence, and newfound friendships.
Coach Holly did not begin playing chess until the age of 9, but was already Turkmenistan’s Youth Champion by the following year, a title which she held onto for the next ten years! She attained the title of Woman Fide Master (WFM) in 2002 and was Turkmenistan’s overall National Women’s Champion in 2010, 2013, 2014, 2017 & 2018. Coach Holly has achieved two of three tournament norms required to earn the title of Woman International Master (WIM), which she is poised to attain in 2021. Coach Holly is currently rated USCF 2285 and FIDE 2166 and is among the top thirty women players in the world!

ABOUT US
Our program is co-led by National Master Majur Juac and John McManus. “Coach Majur” is an elite mentor to rising talent in the tri-state area. (Read more about him in the Wall Street Journal and Washington Post.) Chess Camp Co-director John McManus graduated with highest honors from Columbia University and toiled in social science. However, after defeating a Grandmaster in an exhibition and writing a rap to explain how chess pieces move, “Coach Mac” recognized a new calling and co-founded Start Right Chess with friend Coach Majur.
